Feb 14th, 2007 | By Sean O'Connor | Category: Europe, Food and Wine, Travel, Wine of the WeekSan Quirico Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2005
According to WineBow: Made from 100% Vernaccia grapes organically grown in hillside vineyards surrounding the Tuscan town of San Gimignano. The grapes were harvested in September and October and were vinified in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperatures. Vernaccia holds the distinction of being the very first appellation to receive DOC status when Italy began implementing its wine-classification system in 1966. This wine exhibits the spicy characteristics of the grape and the nose is very penetrating. On the palate the wine is crisp, dry and refreshing with a slightly bitter aftertaste and perfect acidity.
According to Sean O’Connor: This wine is really interesting to me for a couple of reasons. First, I’ve had this wine twice now, and have to admit that it was slightly more memorable the first time. Granted the first time I enjoyed this bottle I was sitting on the edge of San Gigiminano watching the Tuscan day go by with a few friends and a few bottles of local specialities. This is an incredibly crisp and clean unique wine, and I’m especially attracted to it because of the uniqueness identified with it being grown in a particular place - one of my favorite places in the world. The other reason I find this wine interesting is that its certified organic and San Quirico is now able to promote it as such. This is a trend in the wine industry that is worth watching.
