Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher of the WSJ are some of the best wine journalists/critics in the world. Their articles are focused on the right aspects of enjoying wine - in our opinion. They tell the stories of the individuals, the history of the varietals, and dig up the facts that only a couple seasoned [...]

Our wine of choice at dinner last night was a Spanish grenache, Borsao’s Tres Picos. The last grenache we had was from Washington’s Alexandria Nicole winery, so we were eager to look for the differences. Right off the bat Isabell simply said, “Tastes like a Spanish wine.” The wine took a while to open up, [...]

Isabell and I just returned from a relaxing trip to Maui. Not only was the trip a nice break from the drab Pacific Northwest weather, but it was a great opportunity to eat great food at some of the best restaurants in the islands. Here are the highlights:
Dinner at Mama’s Fish House. While Mama’s is [...]

We finally made it happen, dinner at Kirkland’s newest addition, Trellis. Last Thursday we took a stroll down to the restaurant, located in Kirkland’s Heathman Hotel , for an evening with friends, Sarah and Jason. We had been talking about venturing to Trellis for months (ever since it opened last fall) so we were very [...]

A couple of nights ago my wife and I had a very nice Washington wine, the 2005 Alexandria Nicole Grenache. Normally the grenache varietal is reserved for blending into more prominent red wines like cabernet sauvignon and merlot. But recently we have seen more and more traditional blending grapes showcased on their own. And we [...]

This was one of the most interesting white wines I’ve had in quite a while. While I prefer Sauvignon Blanc over Chardonnay, I have, for the most part, mostly had Sauvignon Blanc wines from either California, New Zealand or South Africa. These are crisp wines with normally a floral nose and grassy, mineral notes.
The Pascal [...]

Valentine’s Day has come and gone but my memories of the wine we enjoyed that night have not. Sean prepared our traditional Valentine’s meal of lamb alongside small, yellow potatoes and green beans. The bottle of 2003 Kennedy Shah Syrah from Woodhouse Family Wine Cellars, couldn’t have complimented the dinner better. Purchased a couple summers [...]

One afternoon Bell and I were taking our daily six mile walk in Rome. We were going down a very unassuming street near the Campo de Fiori called via Pellegrino, when we saw a restaurant - no signs on the outside at all - that happened to have a Michelin sticker in the window. The [...]

A dinner at a very unassuming ristorante called Abruzzi, near the Vittorio Emanuele monument in Rome, came the discovery of another fantastic Chianti Classico: the 2001 Marchese Antinori. Was I biased because of the Antinori name again? Absolutely, but Isabell nor I had ever had this particular chianti - the reserve for Antinori. This [...]

On New Year’s day Isabell and I walked from our hotel near the Vatican to the fun, but low-key area of Rome called Trastevere. We had dinner reservations at an osteria called Ferrara. Upon being seated we were given two books, both about six inches wide. They were the white and red wine lists respectively. [...]
