Wine of the Week

Barahonda Barrica 2004

Nov 17th, 2008 | By Sean O'Connor | Category: Wine of the Week

This wine, from Barahonda,  was recommended to us during a recent visit to Seattle’s great new Spanish/French capital hill joint, Olivar.
A blend of monastrell and cabernet sauvignon this wine is from the Yecla DO in Eastern Spain, not far from Valencia.
A couple of things I found interesting when researching the grape and place.

1. Monastrell [...]

Amity 2007 Pinot Noir

Nov 4th, 2008 | By Sean O'Connor | Category: Wine of the Week

A couple weekends ago Liz and I, with my folks, took a drive own through Oregon wine country, and made a stop at Amity Vineyards to sample their sulfur-free wines.  Amity is about an hour south of Portland in the beautiful Yamhill County. Their location is an amazing southerly facing slope that looks out over the [...]

Hestia Cellars 2005 Merlot

Oct 17th, 2008 | By Sean O'Connor | Category: Wine of the Week

I think this might be the first Merlot to make the wine of the week column, and its well made Washington wine.
I’m sure that Hestia has as great a story as they do wine and branding (great logo by the way), but I just couldn’t find it.  According to their about us page [...]

2004 Pierre Amadieu Gigondas Romane Machotte

Sep 24th, 2008 | By Mark Stoltz | Category: Wine of the Week

For the most part I feel like a drink a pretty wide range of wines from all over the world. But last night I tried a wine from a region that I had never had before: the Gigondas of the Rhone Valley in France. And what a treat this wine was! I love big, strong, [...]

Veramonte 2007 Sauvignon Blanc

Sep 8th, 2008 | By Mark Stoltz | Category: Wine of the Week

Summer days (and nights) down here in Texas are pretty warm to say the least. You might recall Emily Resling’s post on summer “patio pounder” wines - well I have one that absolutely must be added to the list. Veramonte’s 2007 Sauvignon Blanc is zesty and refreshing. It has flavors and aromas of citrus, melon [...]

Brian Carter Byzance

Aug 21st, 2008 | By Sean O'Connor | Category: Wine of the Week

Wow - Rhone sytle wines in Washington are blowing up!  Last  week at the Auction of Washington Wines with the Winemakers there was an entire tasting tent dedicated to Rhone Reds.
Brian Carter Byzance 2005 was one that I was able to try; a delicious Syrah/Grenache/Mourvedre blend.
According to Brian Carter: The Byzance blend is carefully crafted [...]

Elle 2006

Aug 13th, 2008 | By Sean O'Connor | Category: Wine of the Week

Another partnership from Mark Ryan and Chris Gorman?  Could the guys that brought us The Ghost of 413 deliver another reasonably priced wine that offers surprising value and an interesting wine experience?  Yep.
They need to work on their website and SEO, as I couldn’t find anything online for Cru Selections or Elle Project or Elle [...]

Mas des Dames

Aug 4th, 2008 | By Sean O'Connor | Category: Wine of the Week

"For us, a good wine is also a pure wine.  A wine made without unnecessary additives or artificial processes." - Aad and Lidewij Kuijper
We enjoyed a bottle of Mas Des Dames AOC Coteaux du Languedoc recently, at the same table as some very prominent Washington and California wines.  The wine is downright tasty and real. [...]

Vin du Lac Dry Riesling 2007

Jul 22nd, 2008 | By Sean O'Connor | Category: Wine of the Week

Dry Riesling on a warm summer evening…. its a perfect combination.  I’ll leave the pairing to Nick Benz, but this wine was delicious with halibut, couscous, and grilled zucchini.
Depending on who you ask, you’ll find that Riesling just may be Washington’s up and coming grape, and the future white identity of the state.  A native [...]
